I am interested in learning about the history of the abolitionist movement -- from the grassroots movements up through the abolishing of slavery as a U.S. government approved institution. What are some of the higher quality books or readings I can look to on this subject?

John Brown has always been a hero of mine, so I highly recommend John Brown: Abolitionist by David Reynolds, and Midnight Rising by Tony Horowitz. Obviously there is more to the abolitionist movement than Brown's quixotic episode in Harper's Ferry, but both these books do a good job of establishing the context.
