I saw this map on /r/MapPorn, what distinguished the pockets that had much higher percentages of slaves? What was the deal with all the slaves near the Mississippi River?
More and more-intensively-farmed plantations, mostly. In Virginia, you can see that the more fertile lands to the east, which had been heavily planted since colonial days, had higher slave populations than the more rugged lands to the west. Similarly, the heavy concentrations of slaves around the Mississippi were due to large plantations there.
