"Dude, it's in the "bourgeois" societies that academics can (and do) write scathing critiques of their own nation's and culture's histories and current practices. You will find the most convincing anti-American, anti-Capitalist literature in the United States itself. The only things it takes to become an academic in the United States is a work ethic, a bit of insight, strong knowledge of the topic at hand, and a good-faith effort to formulate your arguments based on what the source material is telling you (all of which is checked in a peer-review process which itself is made up of a diverse group of thinkers). You don't make it as a scholar in the United States by toeing the official line; but that's precisely what's expected of you in a single-party state like China."
