So I read this book and now I want more. I'm also in the midst of listening to Dan Carlin's Podcast on the History of the Khans. In particular, I am very interested in the tactics and strategy employed by the nomads, and the way of life instituted by the Mongols on the lands they captured. I would give more specific details but I still feel like I don't know much yet and am very interested in these people in general. Any good books? While I would probably prefer less textbook-formats I don't mind them.
You said that you are specifically interested in tactics and strategy. But, if you are still interested in the Mongols, you should consult the book list for other books which might have information you want to read.
I've got two recommendations for you.
Timothy May's Mongol Art of War. This book is very in depth. It talks about battle strategy, what the Mongols learned from their opponents, it gives a little bit of history of the Mongols to go along with the military tactics, and it has information about the daily lives of Mongol warriors. Also, it has illustrations that might help you better understand how to Mongols fought.
Richard A. Gabriel's Genghis Khan's Greatest General: Subotai the Valiant. This book is very 'great man' history. It is a short biography of Subotai, one of Genghis Khan's most successful generals. It doesn't have as much military history, but it does have the entertainment value of the Weatherford book.
Please, please, please take both Weatherford and Dan Carlin with a grain of salt. Both are popular history and they don't always get their facts right.
