I remember reading about him in school. He was black himself and had very interesting opinions. (not MLK)
I'm gonna guess Booker T. Washington. He believed blacks should better themselves with higher thinking and learning crafts to earn the respect of society. He and W. E. B. Dubois were most definitely in your history book.
