Anecdotally I have the sense that pedophilia was in fairly recent decades not nearly as potent a taboo as it is currently. The early gay rights movement allied itself with NAMBLA, a relatively popular public intellectual in the 70s, whose name unfortunately escapes me, wrote a novel in that period which was clearly supportive of sexual relations between men and boys, and the poet Alan Ginsberg was a supporter of NAMBLA without the extremity of approbation which one might expect for a public figure coming out in support of a similar agenda today. I have a sense overall that pedophilia was not nearly as taboo in Western culture as recently as the 70s as it is today. Is my appreciation of the change in the power of the pedophiliac taboo accurate, and if so what forces lead to the current extreme potency of the taboo against pedophilia?
