What was the Japanese tabletop RPG market like in the 80's?

by Darknezz

Early Japanese RPG video games, like the fist Final Fantasy, are seemingly inspired by western tabletop RPGs, mechanically speaking. AD&D was released in 1979, and the first Final Fantasy was released in '89. What was in the intervening time like for tabletop RPGs in Japan? Was it a large scene, did they get translations of Western rulebooks? Or am I off-base in my assumptions of where they took their inspiration from?
