I'm watching this show about the plague in the 14th century. The show focused on effects in Europe, and mostly Western Europe. There was mention that every living person at that time (no qualifications on location) knew someone who died.
But there was no mention whether there were any known effects in Africa?
And, since it originated in Asia, what happened there?
Finally, is there any information if anything similar happened in the Americas, prior to diseases being brought from Europe after 1492?
North Africa was certainly affected, the disease spreading from Alexandria and Tunis throughout Egypt (40% dead by some estimates) and to Morocco. For sub-Saharan Africa, nothing appears to be known.
Asia shows some curiosities: the Middle East suffered heavily, but there's nothing for India, which seems remarkable given its trading connections. And while the epidemic is thought to have originated in northern China, much of the country seems to have escaped.
I've read of evidence for pre-Columbian non-Plague epidemics in the Americas: I'll try to recall where. I don't think any are thought to have been on quite the same scale.
