How has the study on psychology and mental illnesses, as well as the attitudes towards these, changed since the Victorian era?

From what I understand, the Victorian era was where psychoanalysis and the study of mental illnesses first began in a scientific context. How has the attitudes on conditions such as bipolar disease, ADHD, and others changed over time?

Well I mean, they don't drill holes in people's heads, remove pieces of your brain or electrocute you any more- so I guess it's gone pretty well.
