I think Zinn is useful, "A People's History of the United States"--the typical "Let's shock the fresh-faced little freshman" material. But his chapters about the start of American government is a good counterpoint to the glossy myths, and sure to prompt some discussion. Chapter 4 & 5 would be most relevant.
