I'm going to Turkey for a couple weeks in September, and I'd like to get a book to introduce me to the history. The linger the timeframe, the better - I love books that stretch from prehistory to the present. Scholarly or non-scholarly are both fine. Thanks!
EDIT: I should clarify, the book doesn't need to be prehistory to today, I just meant that I'd like it to be expansive as possible, time-wise.
This is a tall order, especially given the timeframe of prehistory to today. The two books I would recommend are Andrew Mango's The Turks Today which focuses upon contemporary issues of the post-Ataturk Republic and Caroline Finkel's Osman's Dream: The Story of the Ottoman Empire, 1300-1923 which covers the Ottoman period in a broad and comprehensive manner.
