ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE DOES NOT TRUMP AN ENTIRE FIELD OF RESEARCH, DAD!
But seriously, is this a common problem?
My dad watches that show Mysteries at the Museum (it's on deep cable, but I forget which chapter), and thus is constantly explaining to me how many museums there are in this country, and that's why my girlfriend, who has a PhD in art history, should be able to find a job at "some small museum" and work her way up.
It drives me up the wall.
Well, not my dad seeing as he's currently nonexistent, but my grandmother was a teacher, interested in history and was involved in a campaign to abolish what I now study (capital punishment). Although we have the same positions, we do disagree on stuff, especially anecdotal stuff from things during her lifetime. But we like to argue and debate anyway, so it all works out.
