The Acts of Union 1707 caused England and Scotland to unite as the Kingdom of Great Britain. Later, the Acts of Union 1800 caused Great Britain and Ireland to unite as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. What led to its then being said to be "united"?
The quick, semantic answer is that Ireland is not on the island of Britain, and so the expanded union post 1801 needed a more accurate name.
