Title. I've heard many times about how undrinkable most water was in premodern times. So how would people away from wells have gotten drinking water? Would they have just drunk wine while travelling/on a military campaign? If so, did they still cut it with water (since drinking neat wine was considered barbaric in some cultures, like ancient Greece)?
Somewhat related to question, we have a section in our FAQ titled Drinking Water which explains that water in the past really wasn't undrinkable. It is a common misconception to think the water was unclean and people had to drink beer or wine to stay hydrated. So when people travelled they most likely just drank the water.
