Christianity began using the cross somewhere around the first century AD. The earliest reference I know of is in 200 AD as a means to mock the church (see: Alexamenos Graffito). The symbol itself, though, is older than writing. It is seen frequently in ancient carvings, notably in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.
