Are there any firsthand accounts of tornadoes or other extreme weather phenomena by Native Americans or westward-moving American settlers?

I've recently become far more interested in extreme weather phenomena such as hurricanes and tornadoes, and it seems like the central US is the singular hotspot for tornado activity in the world. What I'm curious about is if there are any accounts of how the Native Americans or even the settlers that were travelling west through the plains handled tornado survival. Are there any stories from the late 1700's through the mid-1800's of how they survived them?
