My school only offered one B.S. degree track in History so that narrowed it down pretty easily for me.

Do you have a specific area of History you enjoy more than others? For me its the development of Psychology from the late 19th century to the late 20th century.

But I also enjoy the social aspects of The Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany, The Vikings and LGBTQ History, even though I'm not as knowledgeable in those areas

It depends on what you're looking to do with your studies. If you're just looking to learn about things that you find interesting so as to meet the requirements for a second major, pick whatever topic seems most interesting to you.

If, however, you want to actually do something with the degree, like teach in a high school, then you should probably take more general courses coupled with whatever pedagogical courses are required by your state. If you're looking to become a professional historian who is active in academia, you should find what field you are best suited to contribute to and take as many courses specifically about that topic as possible. Lots of general courses and some key classes on theory and methodology are also important to round out your education.

Personally, because I decided I'd prefer academia, I went with the field I felt I was already prepared for: US-Cuba relations. I knew the languages involved (English and Spanish), I've lived in both countries, and I have access to the archives in both Havana and Washington, DC. I find ancient history a lot more interesting, hence my username, but I knew that the field is already full of people who had the languages, skills, etc., to actually contribute something new and interesting to our knowledge of Greece and Rome.

I feel like taking classes is one of the easiest ways to help discover your passions. I took a class on 18-19th Century European history and absolutely fell in love. A big part of the reason for this was the passion of the professor. He showed me how awesome this period of history could be and changed what I wanted to study. I also took a lot of African history which again I never would have thought I enjoyed so much, but the professor who taught it was superb and helped show me how rich African history is. So I would advocate keeping an open mind, find professors who inspire you, and they can help you see the magic in a particular subject which you might just fall in love with yourself.

My way of picking my preference isn't necessarily very applicable, but my birthday is June 6, which was the date of the D-day landings and the sinking of the carriers at Midway, so I ended up focusing a lot of my studies on World War 2

I chose it cause I love my country (US of A baby) and I wanted to teach it to other kids. Also I'm really good at history in general and I had a great US History teacher in high school.
