I was talking to a couple of Indian co-workers and during the conversation I mentioned Gandhi. They proceeded to have an hour long argument about whether or not Gandhi was a good person.
I was unable to keep up with them as they quickly switched languages and simply ignored me to yell at each other. The only information is that I understood is that one of them thought Gandhi supported the splitting caused millions of people to die and the other said it wasn't his fault at all both agreed that this was at the end of his life.
Basically my question is what happened at the end of his life to cause such a divide in their support?
I'm interested to know what possible controversy there is. Gandhi was very open in not supporting the partition and favored religious pluralism and a united India. He did offer a proposal to have a plebiscite among regions with a Muslim majority, but only after the independence of a united India.
Gandhi didn't support partition, he advocated an undivided independent India throughout, until presented with a fait accompli by British fiat and its acceptance by Congress leaders as the only solution to growing division. His last months were spent trying to calm communal tensions: I suspect that this was at the root of your co-workers' disagreement, one more and one less tolerant of the Muslim side during and after Partition.
Gandhi never supported the partition of Indian Subcontinent, the only controversy i can think of is that when Pakistan was formed eventually he announced that he will live remainder of his life in Pakistan but he didnt go through with this plan i dont know if he himself decided against it or his request was denied by Pakistani or Indian govt.
