You know how back in the 19th century some American business had a "no china men" policy. Was that generally literal or did it, as a suspect, actually apply to all East Asians? Like would a Japanese immigrant find it any easier than a Chinese, to get by in the states?

As a follow up, were immigrants from the Indian subcontinent treated any worse or better at the time? I assume that they knew better English due to England's rule over the subcontinent, so did that play any part in Americans possibly viewing them more positively?
