What events led up to the founding of Israel?

As you say that's a pretty huge question.

What specific aspects of the creation of Israel are you interested in?

The Zionist movement? Migration to Palestine/Israel? The role of the Holocaust? The Balfour Declaration? The Mandate of Palestine? The 1948 War (and previous 1947 "civil" war, or possibly Haganah or Irgun action against the British prior to that?) The Arab/Palestinian side?

There are some general histories that might touch on each of those aspects but without creating a full on book list I'm not sure it would be of much interest. Moreover in my experience the generalist books tend to have better access to European or Jewish documents and sources than they do to Arab ones and vice versa.

As it is, the subreddit booklist on Israeli history is a good starting point: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books/middleeast#wiki_israeli_history
