Recently I was surprised to learn that the names of characters in the Iliad all mean something. For example, Telemachus's name literally means "far fighter" in Greek. Why does it seem like later names in Ancient Greece and Rome and modern names do not possess such meaning? What happened to naming children in this way, and why isn't it as common as it seems to have been?
Hope, Grace, Lily, April, Christian, Colt, Deacon, River, etc.
There are still many names that are simple English words but as the world has gotten smaller people have more often used names from foreign languages or have kept use of old names that no longer have (or never had) a meaning in English.
The names still mean something, hence the many "Baby Names" books and websites (like behindthename.com), most of them just mean something in languages other than English.
This isn't unique to English either, while some places still most commonly have names that mean something in the local language, you can find people around the world who have everyday English words for names as well.
