Unfortunately it's difficult to research Army personnel who served between 1912 and 1960 because almost all of the records were destroyed by a fire at the National Archives in St. Louis (where military personnel records are kept) in the 1970s.

So the way to get around that is to first start with what you or your family has. You say you think he was in the 44th Infantry Division--how do you know that? If someone in your family told you that, ask them how they know. Someone might have documentation or perhaps a photo of him in uniform that has an identifying insignia.

Once you find his division, you can likely find a division history that may list him on a personnel roster (though these are not always accurate). Once you have it down to as small of a unit as you can find, you can start looking at combat chronicles and the like. Many WWII unit daily after-action reports are still in NARA's holdings, so you could glean some information from those as well if you made a research trip to College Park, Maryland. Or if you're lucky, someone out there already did that and published a book on his unit.

It says "Kampfbund des gewerblichen Mittelstands" (at least I think that was the abbreviation stands for. You could translate it as "Warrior society of the industrial middle class". I guess it's an award for his business. I don't think it has something to do with military service.

This organisation is mentioned in literature (Geschichte des dritten Reiches by W. Benz). They tried to lobby for the boycott of large, presumably Jewish owned businesses very shortly after the Nazis came to power.
They were not a military or paramilitary group though.

Maybe there is an entry for him in the World War II Registry?
