Why did Turkey send so many troops to such a distant war?"

Well, I certainly didn't expect this. There were a bunch of really good nominations in that thread (like /u/vonadler's great post about WWII and guns). Glad so many people were misled into voting for me appreciated it. The Korean War in general is an oft-overlooked subject and even when it comes up the contributions of secondary powers are rarely covered in much detail.
Kind of weird that all this started because my grandfather served alongside the Turkish Brigade after the war. When he wasn't on punishment detail for being drunk, at least.
