Probably over a tenth of the Empire's population spoke a Slavic language in its last centuries, mostly Czech. Bohemia and Moravia were predominantly Czech-speaking, though with a large German minority. Slovenes predominated in Carniola, southern Styria and southern Carinthia. Poles remained numerous in the east, especially in Silesia. The Sorbian of Lusatia survives to this day, though nearby Polabian died out in the 18th century. There was also a smaller Croat population in the southeast, though Croatia proper lay outside the Empire.
