A while ago I came across an image of a pamphlet given to immigration officers that identified noses and face shapes along with their corresponding races. I believe it was handed out on Ellis Island in the 19th century. Has anyone else seen this or know what I'm talking about?
I'm pretty sure I have seen this. The faces were especially cartoonish? I'd be interested in seeing it as well! Hopefully someone can find it.
I just did a google search with limited results usig "Franz Boas Ellis Island" try giving that a try and poling around a bit. He was an anthropologist who did a lot of work there measuring skull sizes etc and eventually pushed his students to embrace nurture over nature.
In an antique shop I found a government issued translation book for converting "foreign" surnames to Anglicized names.
