Wax seals on bottles and ceramic pots predate cork, but rough cut, i.e. not perfectly fitted corks date back several milennia. You only need a bottle opener for fitted corks, looser ones can be pried out with a knife or something similar.

I have a follow-up question. Was sabrage ever used non-ceremonially? Or was it seen as incredibly wasteful of bottles that could be reused?
