My friend just showed me his old Lutheran bible that was passed down from generation to generation in his family, and I was wondering what the odds are of that artifact still being around today.

Post to r/BookCollecting please. People will be eager to see it and there are some really expert people there. Have a photo of the cover and of the title page.
People in the antiques group don't know much about books, unless one of the bookcollector people happens to stop by.
You will find that some bibles use the date of the translation or first printing, and not of the actual printing of that specific book, because the book was printed continuously and they just were too lazy to change the date each year. All that will be sorted out when they see it.
