Some background: I found this tintype in my Grandparent's cellar. It is almost certainly from my German-Jewish family who settled in NYC in the mid 19th century.
Do the articles of clothing, backdrop, etc provide any insight into the condition of these men's lives? By that I mean approximate date, social status, and so forth. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The backdrop looks like it is a painted canvas in a studio, made to look like a seaside vista. So that suggests that they were wealthy enough to get their pictures taken.
The type of clothing, especially the brimmed caps, strongly suggest a distinctly working class existence. However, the general condition of the clothing, and more importantly, the amount of fat they people have means that they are fairly prosperous tradesmen or petty merchants, most likely, probably not factory workers, although since they are dressed up for a portrait, we can't be sure of that. The clothing styles, combined with the fact that prosperous but still working-class people are having their photos taken in some sort of studio, suggests that the photograph was taken sometime in the 1870-1900s.
I'm not sure that anything can be made of the lack of women in the photograph.
