Studying the armor of the late medieval era I was wondering how thier weapons and tactics would be used to counter this?
When you watch movies they always have the biggest sharpest blade and they cut thier way through the enemy no matter thier armor types or the sword they are carrying but when you think about actually armor suits that have 2-3 layers of armor protection how would they have gotten through this?
Were the famed swords of medieval europe just glorified clubs?
Poleaxes, maces, pikes and other similar weapons were the actual battlefield weapons. Depending on the weapon itself would be the tactic used. With maces you would try to cause blunt damage, and with poleaxes you had the option of doing either blunt damage, or using the sharp end to try to aim for weak spots and penetrate. You would do the same thing with a pike, and when using a swords, you would usually do "half-swording", ie. using one of your hands to grab the sword from the blade to give you much greater accuracy to try to aim for the weakspots and gaps.
Overall though, swords were not nearly as popular as the media would have you believe. Pikes, lances and poleaxes were much more useful and much more common as well.
