The city I live in Brazil was founded by americans from the south that fled to Brazil during and after the war. The font I have for this is the history of the city and also family names that we have in Americana (the name of the city). I'm not sure if this is true, but the city history says that the first north american that came to the region was colonel William Hutchinson Norris, that later brought his family over too. That's how the city got it's name, as it was mostly populated by Confederates and it was called "Villa Americana".

As a follow up, did the civil war push people to move west to escape the fighting? I would think that with half a continent ready to be settled that people would become settlers before becoming refugees.
