A good friend of mine posted Gabriel García Márquez's 2013 article "Why Allende had to die", and it got me really interested about Chile's history. I have little familiarity with the topic outside of a very layman's grasp of the events of the article. Specifically, in the article, Márquez mentions Chile's history of military action in the country, as well as how the highest tiers of the social structure made contingency plans for Allende's victory.
Anyway, any good books on the topics I so inelegantly describe above? Basically, read the article: I want to know more about what is being discussed therein. Thanks!
If you're looking for a general read then A History of Chile, 1808-2002 by William F. Sater and Simon Collier (Cambridge University Press, 2004) is a great start.
