Corollary: did Romans have a 'golden age' of gladiatorial games, when the competitors were seen as the best and most entertaining, compared to other iterations in other periods?

Would gladiatorial fame and fandom be a local phenomenon eg no one in Spain cares about famous gladiators of Italia and vice versa? Was there a minor league and a major league that gladiators could graduate too?
