I was given a slip of paper and was told that it was a receipt from the 13 or 1400s, I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what it says and what it's significance would have been.
That's very well preserved, if it's really that old.
Where did you get this? Do you know where the person got it? The hand certainly looks as old as you claim.
It looks like Middle French, which is a mixture of Latin and French.
It is laid paper, which was fairly new invention of the time. It is in remarkably un-foxed and un-yellowed appearance, but that is possible.
The ink is carbon black, with no sign of gall. That type of ink was used in that early period, and shortly later was replaced by carbon + gall, or pure gall.
And that little bit is all I know.
My experience field is translating portuguese documents from the XV-XVIII centuries, but i think that by the year says "Anno [L]XXX e XIV de [...] octubra", that is, around october from the year 1314. Its a usual form, i dont recognize the language of the document, can anyone confirm if it's english?
