I read that France fired about 170K but I can't tell if that is bullets, shells or both. I also read that the brits fired 170K shells. What about small arms?
I'm afraid your number is off by a few orders of magnitude but it does refer to shells. According to this article, for instance, the British army alone had fired over 170 million artillery shells by the end of the war. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/mobile/magazine-17011607
