I'm assuming you mean what people in the West knew about the Ancient Near East?

They knew mainly what was transmitted by the classical authors and in the Bible, plus what early travelers to the Middle East had reported about ancient monuments (for example Carsten Niebuhr)...

But of course both the classical sources and the Bible don't really tell us anything about the period before 1000 BC and they are very unevenly distributed in focus and reliability.
