We are learning about it in History class, and they said that the people in Geneva under Calvins rule killed those who didn't believe in god which made me wonder, exactly how many people were christians? Also, could someone ELI5 the different churches like episcopal and stuff like that?
During the split from the catholic church people began to theorize that you didn't need the church hierarchy for salvation. Martin Luther pushed the theory of "sola fide" or justification of faith alone(meaning a personal relationship with God was enough to get into heaven). as an ELI5 Calvin Luther and others found different meanings in the personal relationship with one's savior. Calvin believed in predestination here is a further look into Calvinism. Episcopalian is a form of the Church of England which was established by King Henry the 8th it is similar to the Catholic church but made the ruling monarch the head of the church, rather than the pope (basically the king wanted an annulment and the pope wouldn't give him one so he made his own church. that's the best I can do for an ELI5. for more information I suggest reading Religion in Social Context in Europe and America, 1200-1700
