Wouldn't their own citizens want to distance themselves from anything English?

Why didn't places like New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire etc. change their names after the war of independence? Didn't they want to distance themselves as much from the English as they could?
Why didn't Americans rename places that had been named after British things after the Revolution?
Why did American revolutionaries keep place names like "New England" and "New London" after the expulsion of the British?
Since the Americans won the War of Independence, why were the names of places such as New York and New Jersey kept the same if they have British names?
