To clarify, I'm taking a class wherein we are learning mostly of the political and military progression of the Athenians, but Thucydides' text is very difficult to digest. Are there any good analyses of Thucydides either with or without context from other historians of the time?
By far the best version of Thucydides to read is The Landmark Thucydides, its a heavily annotated version of the work, where every subsection is headed by a short summary, a date, and place names relevant to the subsection. Instead of having a couple of not-entirely useful maps at the front or back of the book there are maps every few pages constantly keeping you on track with the myriad place names that come up in the text. Cannot recommend enough if you want to grapple with the text and really understand it.
