Have there been any instances of movements for citizens to have "the right to bear swords", or controversy involving citizens owning weapons (similar to gun ownership today)?

Or any instances of school "stabbings/clubbings" similar to school shootings?

In Sengoku era Japan, then regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi conducted a great "sword hunt" to gather up all weapons held by commoners and ronin (masterless samurai). There was a lot of anger and rebelliousness among the disarmed.
