Located at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, Schenectady was one of the larger European settlements that was relatively close to major Indian population centers into the early 18th century. That said, for most of the 17th century, Schenectady was only small a village, with fewer than 300 persons residing there in 1690 when the "historic massacre" took place.
