So the poofy shirts ... are doublets that show the shirt through slashes?

If I've got you right - yeah, this is a great period to wear!. Every man looks gorgeous in it. Western Europe, mostly England & France, 1500-1530.

You will need -

• shirt, with drawstring neckline and cuffs
• doublet, with sleeves
• sleeveless jerkin that provides the "skirt" down to the knees
• robe, to the knee, with the deep revers
• trunk hose of various styles
• nether hose, which are stockings, very opaque
• codpiece, the only part of the costume that's uncomfortable, but it makes you walk with the proper swagger
• bear-toe shoes, which make crocs feel tight and confining
• berett or biretta, which actually has a brim around the crown
• belt with jewelry buckle
• rings
• sword optional, dagger not

You can find a pattern in Hill & Bucknell, Evolution of Fashion which a seamstress can resize, but just look for the style in patterns for Renaissance Faires. If you don't want it sewn custom (I'd recommend an historical tailor), there are Ren Faire suppliers pret-a-porter. Hill&Bucknell is good to tell you what sort of fabrics and colors are right.

Remember "fashionable simplicity" is an invention of the 20th C. In the Ren, simplicity = poverty. Only too much is enough!
