How would a Barbarian village differentiate from the city of Rome by the time of Augustus?

To be more specific, how would a Celtic or Germanic village be different from Rome by the time Augustus is emperor? Population differences, population density and so on.

A barbarian village would at its largest have no more than 200 inhabitants, Rome in the meantime was growing at a ridiculous rate. Tens of thousands of people lived there, mostly crammed into apartments. Basically, the whole population of Germania back then would fit in Rome.
