While not exactly what you're talking about, Brazil had a pretty interesting route to actual independence that varies greatly from the other Latin American countries to gain their independence (though still as a result of the fallout of the Napoleonic Wars, much as the rest of the region).

Also, several of the constituent republics of the USSR didn't formally declare independence before it disbanded, so this could arguably be the pretty similar to the Singapore situation.
