How did cocaine come into such high popularity in the 70's?

It slowly gained traction in the 70's, but exploded in the 80's. It was a matter of popularity. Once the socialites started to consume it, it resonated down to the common people. I highly recommend, "Killing Pablo," by Mark Bowden. He explains the history and lure of cocaine (and as a bonus, the hunt for Pablo Escobar). It's a fascinating book.
