Ellen Cushman's The Cherokee Syllabary: Writing the People's Perseverance gives a good overview. On addition do providing historical context ant description of the scripts use into the 20th century, it also provides some analysis from a linguistic perspective. Cushman has done a lot on the script, and you can find a number of her other writings on her site.

This is my main recommendation.

If you want more of a biography of the creator, there's April Summitt's Sequoyah and the Invention of the Cherokee Alphabet, which is also reasonable though I haven't spent as much time looking at it.
