Eratosthenes was a greek philosopher who was the first to mesure almost accuratly the circumference of earth using the sun and shadows. If you realize that the earth is a sphere and rotating around the sun ( or the other way around like they believed before ), you make a quick deduction that when it's day time at one place, it's night-time at another place.
