I was watching a tv show and they mentioned this. I was super surprised to hear this, as meat usually doesn't come in abundance, and they were talking about their meat eating habits as a tradition and culture, how did they become so wealthy in this way?
From 1860 to 1930, Argentina had developed an agro-export model based on agriculture's raw materials and all derivates from animal's farming: from meat to milk, leather, wool, etc. Argentina's territory was perfect for it: the Pampas and the Río de la Plata Basin provides a perfect soil for agriculture.
During this time, Argentina succesfully boost this economy's model, allowing it to be one of the top's raw materials at the time. After 1930, the world's crisis affects the country and this model: exports starts to decrease and there were an output of production (among others, meat) that weren't able to be sold in foreign markets.
Large stockpiles of meat was started to be sold in the internal market at cheap prices, and meat started to be a daily element on the diet of the Argentinians to the point to be part of the culture during decades.
In the following years after that crisis, Argentina tried hard to go back to the agro-export model with no success; even tried several small fix to it (ie. the mixed model, which consisted in a major leg of an economy based on agricultural exports and a minor leg of an economy based on industrial goods).
