The classic WW2 escape stories I have been reading all seem to focus on British officers and don't seem to mention other ranks. Were the conditions for enlisted men different and were they involved in escaping as well?

A lot of it is due to officers having a lot of free time to dig tunnels, forge ID papers etc. The Geneva Conventions that governed treatment of POWs allowed enlisted men to be put to work, but forbade that for officers.

Officers and enlisted were kept in different camps. Officers were sworn to try and escape.
