There is a Supreme Court case called US v Spirit of '76 which concerned a film produced in 1917 that the US government censored in its entirety. It's a pretty significant First Amendment case. "Spirit of '76" featured scenes of British atrocities during the Revolutionary War. One especially controversial scene had a British Redcoat spitting a Yankee infant on his bayonet and twirling it gleefully above his head.

It was suppressed under the Espionage Act, and its producer sentenced to 10 years in prison. The government had argued that the film was an attempt to foment discord between the US and its ally in the First World War. The producer had argued that he was only trying to make a buck in the movies.
