I know timesharing is a hugely important software innovation. Who had the idea, and who were the first to implement it? What were some of their successes and failures?
Can't answer all the questions but the idea was first theoretically outlined by Robert Bemer in the late 50s. John McCarthy ( who later founded AI and received the Turing award) is credited with implementing the first working time-sharing system in the early 60s, called CTSS. I don't think that CTSS was commercially available but it's importance is that it successfully demonstrated the concept.
